Are doctors (specifically oncologists) involved in emergency situations often?

I dated a pediatric hematologist-oncologist for 4 years ( a fellow-that is a 3-4 year fellowship after a pediatric residency). He got calls for the ER at night all the time, but usually could manage them by phone or short visits (new leukemics in blast crisis, bleeding problems in thalemias, or hemophiliacs etc). true emergencies were handled by the ER docs. He did have to manage the deaths of many patients on the hem-onc floors however.
